Katy Dunn is a frequent rail traveler from Miami riding the Silver Meteor for her sixtieth high school reunion. Over lunch in the new dining car, we talked about her husband’s longtime fascination with rail travel and her love of rail travel herself, which she says is much better than trying to visit family by car.
WHERE ARE YOU RIDING TO?
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE TRAIN?
Cuz I like riding trains and it’s easier than driving – not as quick, but easier. I take this train a few times a year.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT RIDING THE TRAIN?
Comfort ease, nobody can get to you. Back when I was working I would come up every few weeks and there were no phones.
IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BY TRAIN ANYWHERE IN THE US, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
Glacier National Park. The last time I was there with my husband. We stayed there and my husband got a room and I said ‘What side [of the hotel] did you get on?’ and he said well I don’t know and I said ‘Well what are you doing?’ We came back out and wanted to get a room on the train side. They got engines outside breathing all night, and I love that sound.
HOW DO YOU THINK TRAIN TRAVEL CAN BE USEFUL FOR EVERYDAY COMMUTERS? PEOPLE LOOKING TO TRAVEL?
More Intercity trains would be good. We’re lucky in Miami because now we’ve got two [intercity trains.] That kind of intercity mobility is important in the big cities.
Probably more stops in some places where you go for 100 miles and you never stop. It’s not so much that nobody ever rides it it’s so people don’t have to travel 100 miles to get to a train station.
IF YOU COULD IMPROVE ONE THING ABOUT TRAIN TRAVEL WHAT WOULD IT BE?
When I woke up this morning I thought thank God Charlie’s there [my husband] cuz I don’t know to make a reservation. It might be nice if they had a telephone car where if people wanted to talk on their phone they could go there.
