Taking Amtrak’s City of New Orleans, Chef Madi will next visit Greenwood, MS, which sees about 15,000 passengers pass through its Amtrak station. The red brick depot was built in 1917 and it is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Many people may not know of Greenwood, but it is an important city in the culinary world. Viking Range, commonly known as Viking and the presenting sponsor of Summer by Rail’s visit to Greenwood, has its headquarters in the city. Viking is a major employer in the area and operates three manufacturing facilities and a distribution center all based in Greenwood. The company was founded in 1987 by Fred Carl Jr., and since that time, has grown to be recognized as one of the best and top ranges for chefs. Viking appliances are recognized globally as the foremost brand in the high-end residential appliance industry and are sold through a network of premium appliance distributors and dealers worldwide.

Viking was also one of the first culinary brands to develop an experiential component by creating the Viking Hospitality Group which consists of The Alluvian Hotel and Spa, The Viking Cooking School and Giardina’s Restaurant. This development project not only helped rebuild Greenwood’s downtown, but put Greenwood on the map as one of the South’s leading tourist destinations. Viking’s commitment to its community does not end there; The company is now teaming up with the Rail Passengers Association to help restore Amtrak service throughout the Gulf States.

During her time in Greenwood, Chef Madi will meet with Viking executives, tour their facilities and stay at the Alluvian Hotel and Spa. Chef Madi will also have the pleasure of participating in one of The Viking Cooking School’s classes. From the novice to the experienced cook, thousands of students including kids, moms and dads, business professionals, and others come alone, or together with friends to attend Viking Cooking School classes each year. If you love to cook, entertain, or just appreciate the pleasure of great food, consider following in Chef Madi’s footsteps by taking a trip to Greenwood — the Viking Cooking School is the place to indulge your passions!
